Republican presidential candidate Ron DeSantis’s campaign released a video criticizing former President Trump’s stance on the LGBTQ community as Pride Month concludes.
The video includes a clip from the 2016 Republican National Convention where Trump pledges to protect LGBTQ citizens and highlights his opposition to transgender bathroom legislation during his campaign.
The video also showcases headlines describing DeSantis’s transgender policies as extreme, draconian, totalitarianism in disguise, unwarranted and un-American.
Last month, the Florida governor signed several bills into law that directly affect transgender individuals.
These laws limit gender-affirming healthcare options for transgender children, prohibit transgender individuals from using bathrooms aligned with their gender identity, and prevent teachers and students from using their preferred pronouns in schools.
During the 2016 campaign, Trump appeared to support the LGBTQ community, but his administration quickly targeted the transgender community.
He revoked guidance for schools on transgender students and banned transgender individuals from serving in the military. The administration also ceased to argue for federal protections against employment discrimination for transgender people.
In his 2024 campaign, Trump adopted even more extreme language, promising to ban transgender women from participating in women’s sports and referring to gender-affirming surgery for transgender youth as “child sexual mutilation.”
Conservatives have shown increased opposition to Pride Month this year, criticizing and boycotting companies that express support for the LGBTQ community.
This opposition coincides with a surge in anti-LGBTQ legislation at the state level, with over 500 bills introduced and 70 enacted, as reported by the Human Rights Campaign.
