John Carney is a famous director known for making heartwarming romantic movies that often use music to bring characters together. His new movie, “Flora and Son,” is a lot like his other hits, such as “Once,” “Begin Again,” and “Sing Street.”
In “Flora and Son,” we meet a single mom named Flora and her son Max, who live in Dublin. Flora tries to help Max stay out of trouble by giving him a guitar, but he’s not interested.
Max prefers electronic, hip-hop, and pop music. So, Flora decides to learn to play the guitar herself and hires an American teacher named Jeff to teach her over Zoom.
Through learning music, Flora not only discovers her own voice but also connects with Jeff and her son Max.
John Carney, who wrote and directed the movie, uses music to help the characters communicate and express their emotions.
The most heartwarming part of the film is when Flora and Jeff start a long-distance relationship through music.
They have sweet moments where they play music together, even though they’re far apart. It’s like a lovely daydream.
Although the actors’ performances are charming, some people might not like the movie’s soundtrack as much.
The music is a mix of acoustic and electro-pop rap dance music, which doesn’t work as well as the music in Carney’s previous films.
Eve Hewson plays Flora, and she does an excellent job. Flora is a lively and determined character who’s trying to balance being a parent with having fun.
Her ex-husband, Ian, is also a musician, and Flora initially wants to win him back. However, her guitar lessons with Jeff show her that there’s more to love than her past.
Joseph Gordon-Levitt plays Jeff, who becomes Flora’s love interest.
He’s passionate about music and shares his enthusiasm with Flora.
Max, played by Orén Kinlan, adds tension to the story, especially during arguments with Flora.
Towards the end of the movie, there’s a musical performance, but some people might find it a bit messy, with weaker lyrics compared to the rest of the movie.
In a nutshell, “Flora and Son” is a film about how music can bring people together, featuring a single mom finding her voice, forming a connection with her music teacher, and learning to relate to her teenage son through music.
It’s a heartwarming story, even though some may not enjoy the soundtrack as much as Carney’s previous movies.
